Explain propeller shaft and it's parts | what are advantages and disadvantages of shaft 2021| sparking india

It is simply defined as the shaft that transmits motion from the gearbox output shaft to the differential of the vehicle is called propeller shaft. Its other name is drive shaft because this shaft moves the automobile in a forwarding direction.

Mainly this shaft connects the gearbox and differential of the automobile. This shaft is generally used in rear-wheel drive vehicles only.

Functions of the propeller shaft

  1. The main function of the drive shaft to transmit the power from the gearbox to the rear axle through the differential.
  2. It will also transmit motion at varying angles.
  3. The shaft will transmit the rotary motion of the transmission shaft to the rotary motion of rare wheels.
  4. It also accommodates the change in length.

Main components of the propeller shaft.

  They are

   1. Solid shaft

   2.Slip joint

   3.universal joint

Solid shaft

These shafts are made up of alloy steels either in form of solid or hollow shafts.

These shafts are made in tubular cross-sections so that's why these shafts withstand the torsion and shear stresses, and also vibrations at high speeds. The propeller shafts may be open-ended or enclosed in a torque tube.

Universal joint.

The propeller shaft has consisted of two universal joints located at its ends. These two universal joints maintaining constant velocity and also positioning the differential.

These universal joints have one of the joints is connected to the gearbox output shaft and one end of the propeller shaft and another one is joined connected to another end of the propeller shaft.

The universal joint allows the transmission of power and motion also at any angle to position of the rear axle.

Slip joint.

In case the vehicle moves on irregular road surfaces, the distance between differential and gearbox changes. the main function of the slip joint is to adjust the changes in the length of the propeller shaft according to the moment of the rear axle and wheels. On the gearbox side, a slip joint with internal splines is provided between the joint and propeller shaft. These internal splines of slip joint accommodate external splines of the propeller shaft

To allow a change in length of the shaft.

Advantages of the propeller shaft.

1). The construction of propeller shaft is easy

2).maintanance cost of the shaft is less

3).easy to lubricate the propeller and universal joint.

4). working of the propeller shaft is noiseless.

Disadvantages.

1) capital cost of the propeller shaft is high.

2). Very quick to damage of propeller shaft.

Application of propeller shaft

1). Heavy-duty vehicles like four-wheelers.
